Gayme Time
Sports News and Views

Yes! Gay and lesbian athletics are alive and well in Greater Cleveland . . . and growing. Although seemingly still "in the closet" to most people, there are a large number of groups who meet on a regular basis for fur, competition, and social interaction.
This section of the Chronicle will strive to serve as a clearinghouse and fountain of information for all you jocks and social players.
Perhaps the oldest organized gay athletic organization in our area is the North Coast Bowling Association. It is now finishing its tenth season with a total of 28 teams involved in competition and fun. With a schedule running from the week following the NOCI Picnic through the end of April, the league provides a great way to play your way through those cold winter days. League play is every Sunday at Ambassador Lanes downtown, and very affordable. Many bowlers also compete in and help organize the annual Gay Invitational Fellowship Tournament (G.I.F.T.) which is an international event. The league is very co-ed.
Another way to meet, greet, defeat, and be defeated (all in fun of course) is the North Coast Volleyball League. This organized association also meets in the winter months with two separate seasons. At the moment, this group has five teams and is growing. The current season ends on April 12. New teams will gather with the old in August to begin the first season of the new year. League play is every Friday evening and open to all comers, male and female.
Ladies' Touch Football... yes ma'am. For a bit of rough-and-tumble fun on a Sunday morning in the summer, what could be more exciting than a great game of football? This league is now in its sixth year and expanding. Play usually begins in mid-April and is open to all female teams. The rules are Canadian Touch.
One of the least-known sporting groups in our area is the North Coast White Water
Association. (Whee-water-sports!) Once a month from June through September, individuals meet in Ohiopyle in western Pennsylvania for a weekend of rafting, camping, hiking, campfire chats and relaxation. This adventure is very inexpensive and rewarding. (It's fun and scary, too.) As with all athletics, men and women are welcome and urged to participate.
Softball in the Cleveland area has been around for quite a few years and enjoyed by many. The current organization is also known as the North Coast Athletic Association with most teams sponsored by local bars or businesses. Play is open to both males and females on a team basis with games played on Sundays in the summer. This year the Midwest Invitational Softball Tournament will be held right here in Cleveland. It takes place on Labor Day Weekend and promises to be a memorable
event.
In our community, there are many other athletic events which help to coagulate our togetherness as well as build our bodies and self-esteem. Many are on an individual, social basis.
The largest social athletic group is the Sunday Recreational Volleyball League. This group of fun-seeking individuals meets every Sunday of the year, welcoming all skill-levels for an afternoon of socially-rewarding athletic activity. I am sure that there are athletes out there who are trying to network with others to enjoy their particular sport and I hope to bring these efforts to light so that every group will have a community representation. If you, or anyone you know, wishes to join existing organizations, most of them are listed in the Resource Directory of this paper. Any new groups wishing to form, let me know and I will do all I can to help. Just write me in care of the Chronicle or call to chat or leave a message at 662-3073. One more note...
Team Cleveland is now forming for participation in all sports at the Gay Games IV in New York City. Come on Cleveland—let's roar in 1994 ... be a part of it.
See Charlie's Calendar and the Resource Directory on pages 22-23 for locations and phone numbers.
